Aluminium 2017 is an aluminium alloy often called by its UNS name A92017. It has excellent machinability, high strength, good fatigue resistance, and impressive corrosion resistance. Consisting mainly of aluminium, copper and magnesium, this alloy has outstanding mechanical properties that allow it to be used in numerous applications. Aluminium 2017 takes the form of plates and blocks, which are commonly used for different purposes in aerospace, military industry, automotive and structural engineering, among others.
The composition of Aluminium 2017 comprises approximately 4-6% copper, 0.5-1.2% magnesium, plus some manganese, silicon and zinc in minor quantities. The presence of copper plays a significant role in improving the strength and hardness of this alloy. Magnesium imparts heat treatment ability to the alloy, thus improving its mechanical properties even more. As such, Aluminium 2017 is useful for applications necessitating both lightness and durability.
In particular, Aluminum 2017 plates and blocks are highly valued in the aerospace industry because they can withstand high stress and fatigue, making them ideal for aircraft structural elements like wing ribs, fuselage frames, and landing gears. Similarly, the army sector includes armoured vehicles and other defence equipment where the strength-to-weight ratio matters most. Additionally, because of its lightweight nature, Aluminum 2017 plates are preferred for manufacturing engine components, suspension systems, and other parts that undergo high stresses, leading to improved fuel economy & performance.
One advantage of using Aluminium 2017 plates is their excellent machinability, which ensures precise and efficient manufacturing procedures. This feature also makes fabrication easier, especially when producing intricate or complex parts whose dimensions must be accurate. Further advantages include corrosion resistance, which ensures longer product life spans and reduces maintenance costs.
The heat treatment process further enhances the properties of Aluminium 2017 Blocks: Age hardening, subsequently to solution treatment, increases the alloy's yield and tensile strengths, making it competitive with certain high-strength steel alloys while maintaining a much lower density. Heat treatment is also required to change the material properties as needed.
Moreover, Aluminium 2017's weldability and workability make it a versatile choice for numerous fabrication techniques, including welding, cutting and forming. This enables customization of shape and size, which caters to exact engineering requirements, thus enabling the development of innovative design and manufacturing approaches.

Melting and Casting
Steel and alloying metals are loaded into an electric arc furnace. Once in the furnace, the metal is heated to a specific temperature above its melting point, usually in excess of 2800°F.
Forming
Most cast steel is formed by hot rolling—the slab, bloom, or billet is heated and passed through large rollers, stretching out the steel into a longer, thinner form.
Heat Treatment
Heat treatment strengthens rolled steel by recrystallizing the deformed microstructure. Most steel is heat treated by annealing.
Cutting or Machining
Steel is cut to a specified shape and size. The steel can be sheared with circular knives, sawed with high-speed blades, or blanked with punches.
Finishing
Steels can be made with a wide variety of surface finishes. The chosen surface finish is not purely aesthetic. The type of finish is determined by the intended application.
