What Are Duplex Steel Sheets, Plates and Coils?
Duplex steel sheets, plates and coils consist of an alloy of austenite and ferrite that provides unique properties when machined. Machinability may present difficulty due to high strength/toughness ratio; specific tools and techniques often must be utilized when efficiently processing this metal.
One of the most notable features of duplex steel is its exceptional corrosion resistance. Even under harsh environments containing chloride ions, its durability withstands unsparingly, making it suitable for marine and chemical industry applications and helping prolong structures' and equipment's lifetimes while cutting maintenance costs significantly.
Duplex steel's welding properties make it one of its key attributes, with numerous techniques including shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding and flux-cored arc welding all being applicable for its production. Furthermore, proper preheating and post-weld heat treatments must take place post-weld to maintain desired properties without sensitization and cracking issues developing post-weld.
Duplex steel sheets, plates and coils find wide applications across industries. Their diverse use includes offshore oil and gas platforms, desalination plants, chemical processing equipment as well as pulp and paper production - such industries often benefiting from its combination of strength, corrosion resistance and weldability which makes these versatile metal products highly advantageous.
Duplex steel sheets, plates and coils find applications across many industries. Their structural qualities make them essential in bridge, building and infrastructure projects as well as manufacturing pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks due to their reliability.
Duplex steel plays an indispensable role in automotive engineering, where its high strength and corrosion resistance makes it ideal for components requiring high strength such as exhaust systems or suspension components, in addition to finding applications in aerospace engineering when fabricating aircraft components subjected to harsh environments.
Energy sectors utilize duplex steel extensively in the creation of pipelines to transport fluids and gases that contain corrosion-causing elements, with its resistance to stress corrosion cracking making it an excellent choice. Furthermore, renewable energy projects utilizing it include wind turbines and solar panel frameworks due to its durability under environmental stress conditions.

Melting and Casting
Steel and alloying metals are loaded into an electric arc furnace. Once in the furnace, the metal is heated to a specific temperature above its melting point, usually in excess of 2800°F.
Forming
Most cast steel is formed by hot rolling—the slab, bloom, or billet is heated and passed through large rollers, stretching out the steel into a longer, thinner form.
Heat Treatment
Heat treatment strengthens rolled steel by recrystallizing the deformed microstructure. Most steel is heat treated by annealing.
Cutting or Machining
Steel is cut to a specified shape and size. The steel can be sheared with circular knives, sawed with high-speed blades, or blanked with punches.
Finishing
Steels can be made with a wide variety of surface finishes. The chosen surface finish is not purely aesthetic. The type of finish is determined by the intended application.
